The Confluence and Dallington Community Garden

[Head a short way along River Road (along the main road or follow the riverbank) until you reach the footbridge at the corner of Banks Avenue].

Welcome to the Confluence! A ‘confluence’ is where two or more waterways meet and join. Can you spot where the Dudley Creek enters the Avon Ōtākaro River?

Because you humans can’t fly easily like me (remember, I’m a pīwakawaka), it’s hard for you to see how Dudley Creek makes its way across the city. The creek flows all the way from Bishopdale, fed by an urban freshwater spring. It meanders (under the road in places), through Papanui, Mairehau and Shirley before joining the Avon Ōtākaro River at River Road.

This end of the creek is tidal. What sort of animals and plants live here?

To reduce the potential for flooding in the area, Christchurch City Council has installed structures and systems that divert flood water from Dudley Creek directly into the Avon River and Horseshoe Lake.

Nearby, in Banks Avenue, there’s a delightful pocket-sized community garden to enjoy. This community space was developed where a handful of houses used to be. Garden beds have been set up by Dallington Community Garden. Their neighbourhood pantry is stocked at weekends, and they welcome volunteer garden helpers.

What are the tallest plants here? What types of fruit will be picked? Explore and see what other plants, animals and objects you can find.

Local residents and community garden volunteers keep developing the garden. They want to  make the space as welcoming as possible. The pergola offers some protection from rain and sunshine. Next time you visit, see what they have been up to and maybe bring a picnic to enjoy.

Imagine this garden space in the future. Over time this landscape will morph and change, like a native gecko shedding its skin as it matures and grows.

What will it look like in 50 years’ time?

[Visit Adventure Ave  and Di Madgin’s Garden before returning to, and crossing over, Medbury Bridge].
