Eco-Action Nursery Trust (Chimea Crescent)

What’s your favourite season of the year?

For native-plant provider Eco-Action Nursery Trust, autumn is action time. It’s when the native trees, grasses and shrubs that the trust (and associated schools and community groups) have grow in nurseries are planted out in the  red zone/Green Spine. One such spot is in the Chimea Terrace area.

Each year, up to 26 schools and community groups from around the city contribute plants they’ve been growing. Students and groups take part in planting days organised for autumn and winter. Mulching and weeding events also help ensure the plants’ success.

That’s not to say the plants themselves aren’t busy earlier in the year! They emerge months before, from the free seedling kits that are provided by the trust. They are tended by the schools and groups, who are also offered hands-on instruction in plant propagation and planting techniques.

Ecologists from the Christchurch City Council help out with plant choice and location.

What’s the idea behind all this activity? It’s to provide native birds (like me) with food and habitat. Woop, woop!

All my nectar-loving friends – tūī, kererū and korimako bellbird – are so excited about these regeneration projects. We’ll soon be able to move into new homes here, in the Green Spine!

Chur!
