AVON-ŌTĀKARO FOREST PARK

Avon Ōtākaro Forest Park (Brooker Reserve)

Wellington has one. Most major cities in New Zealand have one. But not us. What am I twittering on about? An eco-sanctuary!

Yesssssssss. Perhaps… one day… Brooker Reserve might evolve into one. Cheep, cheep! Wouldn’t that be a fab concept? Heaven for native birds (and for lots of other native creatures, too).

What do you think about the idea?

The planted area here is described as an “exemplar”: an example of what a large-scale, permanent ecological park might look like. It is also located near Travis Wetland Ōruapaeroa, another significant nature reserve.

One advocate for a Zealandia-style nature park in Christchurch is well respected local ecologist Colin Meurk. (As you probably already know, Zealandia is a prolific wildlife sanctuary in Wellington). He is also a committee member of the Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park, the organisation that maintains this reserve.

So, the genesis of our very own eco-sanctuary may well be here, at this spot.
