Kia ora! Join me, Huanui your ‘fan-trail’ guide, on the corner of Retreat Road and Patten Street.
I can perch here in the shady trees of Retreat Reserve while you wander and wonder at the community exhibition.
Each board tells something of the experiences of local Avonside residents who left their red-zoned properties as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes. It features 12 display boards along the fence line. Lianne Dalziel, Christchurch Mayor at the time, opened the exhibition here in 2019.
What story or photo affects you most? Why?
They were created by the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury’ with support from local resident Lawrence Roberts. His Avonside home was one of those seriously damaged.
Roberts helped connect the community through his blog avonsideblog. The reserve, too, became a neighbourhood gathering place.
The panels are a sample of those that made up a larger exhibition that was part of the 2013 Christchurch Arts Festival.
In what ways are art and storytelling important to you? To the city’s communities and cultures?
