Richmond Community Garden

You’ve arrived at an urban oasis!

As you wander through the community garden, tune in with your ears! What do you hear? Chickens? Dogs barking? Young tamariki playing in the ‘mud kitchen’? Are my bird friends and pīwakawaka whānau chirping in the trees above your head?

Can you believe that the land you’re standing on used to be the backyards of six Avonside houses, plus the location of a rest home for retired people? If you are sharp-eyed like me, you might spot a piece of garden art made up of letterboxes from various red-zoned properties. (Hint: you have 3 acres of garden here in which to explore and find it!)

What else can you see? Through the #REDTOGREEN photoframe you might spot a former house that’s been left onsite. Riverlution Eco Hub is now a different sort of ‘home’: a workspace for community groups and eco activities.

My birdy friends and I really appreciate the pest-animal Trapping Project. Think ‘bye, bye’ to rats and hedgehogs! These pests can target bird eggs and offspring – and the insects that keep this garden thriving.

What’s the highlight of your visit? You might have discovered the onsite cafe, which serves freshly made ice creams using fruit from the garden. Not my kind of food, but you humans seem to enjoy it, particularly on a hot day. Enjoy!

Before you leave, take a photo through the picture frame (or anywhere in the garden) and post it to social media using hashtag #REDTOGREEN
