MAP / HERITAGE TRAIL / NAUGHT BOYS’ ISLAND
Naughty Boys’ Island
Ka pai, explorers! Officially, this is the ‘end’ of the Green Spine trail. Or perhaps, for you, a visit to this most easterly spot is just the beginning of your trail adventures?
Whatever you’ve seen – or are about to see – along the trail, I hope it gives you a great overview of happenings along the river corridor and former red zone. It’s exciting to share these travels with you, through this changing landscape dominated by the iconic Avon Ōtākaro Awa (river). In what ways do you feel inspired by all the community projects?
The reserve at Naughty Boys Island is a microcosm of what’s happening along the river corridor. Just as tragedy (the Christchurch earthquakes) changed how we use land in our city – especially out east – Naughty Boys’ Island has a history of tragedy and transformation, too.
The information panel tells us more. Pause for a moment to think about those two adventurous boys who lost their lives. In what way is the nature reserve here a fitting tribute to their lost lives?
How, too, might the enhancement of the Green Spine be a fitting response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake? A tribute to the 185 lives lost? What are the benefits of ‘re-wilding’ our city and developing communal spaces to enjoy?
I’m reminded of a proverb that talks of resilience, empowerment and using our abilities and resources to build success:
He kai kei aku ringa
There is food at the end of my hands.
What positive legacy can you imagine for the Green Spine and our city? How can you bring that to life for the enjoyment of our community?
