Tino pai trailblazers!
What have you experienced, learnt or seen so far? What are some stand-out features of the trail for you?
Here at Snell Place Footbridge, you can skip, scooter, bike – or make up a silly walk – across the Ōtakaro Avon Awa (river). Not only does the arched structure provide access to each riverbank, it also connects neighbourhoods, allowing people to enjoy the amenities on both sides. In the coming week, notice how many bridges you use in your day-to-day life around the city. Have you ever taken note of them before?

A narrower bridge known as Dallington Foot Bridge used to span the river here. Maybe you remember it? This new bridge (along with two other footbridges and the Dallington Landing {URL}) was built by Christchurch City Council using money from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Trust – not rates! It was formally opened in May 2022. It’s engineered to stay intact in the event of another natural disaster. What do you like about its colour, design or construction?
As you wander across it, take note of the changing view. How does your perspective of the surroundings change, as you cross from one side of the river to the other? Stop mid-way and watch for any tūna eels and fish in the river, and insects and other wildlife on its banks.
heading 2
On the eastern side of the river is Avon Park {URL]. There’s loads of activity spaces on offer there. Or you might want to head south-west to Dallington Landing {URL], where you can unpack your thermos and sammies (if you’ve come prepared!) .
In need of a restful stop? Nearby on Glenarm Terrace are are Glenham Gardens, where you are invited by the former owners to ‘sit and contemplate’. The gardens were once part of family homes but are now public.
Yep, we’re spoilt for choice! Don’t rush, though: you can always come back again another day!
Keep track of your visits and the changes you see: snap the view through the #REDTOGREEN photoframe and post to social media!
